Alaska – DBA
File a Alaska DBA
For those who have a business in Alaska that is not being run under the owner’s name or the parent corporation name, it must be registered with the state.
The advantage to registering the fictitious business name is to prevent another entity from operating under the same name. As a matter of fact, if a company uses a name that is similar to the registered DBA a lawsuit can be filed to prevent that business from using the name.
Sole Proprietorship
When starting a small business in a DBA or fictitious name a state business license must be obtained. No tax filings are required, as there is no state personal income tax in the state of Alaska. The DBA fictitious name must be registered so the business can be identified by any who seek information on the business and its owner. There is a $200.00 biennial license fee that must be paid to the state of Alaska with the exception of businesses that need another license such as a commercial fishing license.
Selecting a DBA Name
The state of Alaska has very specific guidelines for choosing a DBA name:
- Do not use the words corporation, LLC, limited partnership or limited liability partnership as these are specific types of businesses and require a different state business registration.
- Do not use the words city, village, township or any phrase that indicated the business is part of the government.
- Obscene or vulgar language will not be permitted in the title of the DBA.
- Do not use words that indicated a slogan.
- Avoid words that indicate a type of service or indicate a specific type of merchandise.
- Words that indicate an association or organization are not permitted.
Requirements for Filing a DBA
Alaska has very specific requirements for filing a DBA. These include:
- A $25.00 registration fee paid to the Corporations Section of the Division of Occupational Licensing.
- The DBA must be used in stationary, advertising, bank accounts and licenses.
- Owner’s name and address are required on the application.
- A description of the business is required.
- The name of the business owner is required.
- Owner’s signature is required on the registration form.
The fictitious name and filing fee must be sent to:

P.O. Box 110808
Juneau, AK 99811-0808
(907) 465-2530
