In Michigan, whenever a company or an organization wants to run a business with the fictitious name, US States including Michigan requires that person to file a DBA (Doing Business As). This entitles a businessman to run his business, open a business bank account, receive payments and even advertise. Once a DBA is registered no other company or business in competition can use the same name. Corporations can generate more than one DBA without having to create more than one business entity.
As a rule, in Michigan DBA is not filed at the state level, expect for a foreign corporation or a business entity who wants to use other business name.
Rules to file a Michigan DBA
Any businessman desirous to use a DBA should go through the database to ensure the name they intend to use is not registered by any other businessman. For the Corporations, LLCs and LLPs have to fulfill certain requirements for naming like the corporate name for domestic corporations must have the word “corporation”, “company”, “incorporated” or “limited”.
Though it is a registered business name, you can conduct business under an assumed name, it is not a legally registered entity name with the State of Michigan. It also does not assure that the business name which is chosen would be uniquely yours.
In certain situations, a business needs to file a DBA designation at the local level. Contact the County Clerk Office in the County where the business is headquartered to get the requisite information, steps, and forms.

How To file a DBA
Fill the form with full name, address, the location of the business and the business name chosen. If any Identification Number had been provided by the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs Corporations, Securities and Commercial Licensing Bureau should be filled in as well. In certain cases where the process of filling the form is different, ask the particular authority to find for the exact requirements.
